20,000+ Rumours

One of my favourite ways to create a world that feels like it’s alive and real is to sow it with stories and rumours of strange places and mysterious goings-on. Every town the players visit brings them new tales of weird and wonderful things; every city has its urban legends, its wandering ghosts that a friend-of-a-friend saw once upon a time, its crocodiles in the sewers.

Rumours shouldn’t always be entirely true; maybe the howling poltergeist that dwells in the cellar of the tavern is actually just rumbling pipes, or maybe it’s the sound of the innkeeper’s midnight ritual to a dark god, taking place in a hidden chamber. Rumours lead to investigation, which leads to adventure; in turn, allowing your players to pick and choose what leads they follow invests them in your world and your game, making them feel like mystery and adventure lies around every corner, too much for them to ever explore in one lifetime. By picking their own path, the story truly becomes theirs – all you need do is run with it.

How To Use These Tables

Below you will find four tables, detailing the person the rumour is about, what they are said to be doing, the unusual thing they are doing it with, and where it might be happening.

You can use these tables in two ways. For a quick rumour, roll 1d12 one and read that number off each chart. Each line of each table joins together to form one cohesive rumour that you can easily build a night of adventuring
around.

If you prefer things a little more random and unusual, you can instead roll 1d12 seperately for each table. This may result in combinations that seem strange, but that can easily lead to memorable sessions as they try to sort out truth from fiction. Rolling once on each table means that you will never have the same rumour twice, with over 20,000 possible combinations!
