So, that’s Mapvember over (even though it’s now the middle of December). I’ve really enjoyed drawing a map every day, and though a lot of what I produced isn’t great I’ve definitely seen myself improve. It’s also been very satisfying to have a lot of content for the site over the past 30 days.
I’ve been thinking a lot the past week or so about how to keep this momentum going. Daily updates forever would be nice, but realistically I know I’m not going to be able to stick to that. And daily low-effort maps are fine as a temporary thing, but nobody wants that all the time. A schedule is no good if there’s no variety in it and no chance of sticking to it.
With that in mind, I’ve settled on a three-times-a-week schedule that I think I’ll be able to keep up with. Here’s what it’s going to look like (though I’m open to any feedback you might have about it – it’s important to me that I’m providing the kind of content people want to see):
- Monday Maps. Every Monday I’ll put up a new map. What goes with it will vary; usually it will be similar to the maps I’ve been posting during Mapvember – that is, a map and a little bit of flavour/background information – but I’d like to try and get at least one fully written-up adventure here a month (even if they’re short). I can’t promise that every month though, so I’m just going to commit to providing a map a week. Anything else that goes with it is a bonus. (I’m also going to do my best to make sure they’re all big and have grids but, again, results may vary).
- Wednesday Stat Boost. I’ve posted a few other things besides maps this month. There have been a couple of random tables, a couple of articles, a review of Volo’s Guide To Monsters. Wednesday will be the day for these kinds of posts. Sometimes it will be short and sweet, a random table or a new background. Other weeks it will be long-form articles, reviews, or whatever. (As another example – I’ve been working on an album of background music for gaming for a while now. When that’s done, that will show up on a Wednesday.) This is the stuff you can drop into your game to make it awesome. If there’s anything you’d like to see, let me know in the comments.
- Friday Fight Night. A few weeks ago I started reading through a lot of campaign journals, and really enjoyed them. I’ve kept detailed logs of my group’s game since it started, and I really enjoy telling stories about our game, so as a bit of fun I’m going to start writing them up into a weekly campaign log. I’ll also use this as an opportunity to talk about anything interesting that went on from a DM’s perspective, so they should hopefully serve as a guide for new DM’s, too. And, as an added bonus, I’ll include a map from that session as well.
I’m starting this schedule from today – which means that the first Friday Fight Night will be live in a couple of hours.
I’ve also gone ahead and set up an email list. I don’t intend to use it much – there won’t be a weekly newsletter, and absolutely no daily updates – but a couple of people on Twitter asked if I could send out the Best of DMs Guild posts as an email, so I might roll that into one monthly update that I can send out. If you’re interested you can sign up below. I absolutely promise not to spam you – if nothing else, it costs me money to send more than a certain number of emails.
