What Happened To That Coin?
- It’s been partially dissolved by some kind of acid. The edges are wrinkled and pockmarked.
- It’s been grafted by searing heat to a fingertip that’s still attached, though all the flesh has long since vanished.
- A hole has been punched through the middle with a square punch. The space has been filled in with lead.
- Both faces have been sanded perfectly smooth, leaving a plain disc of metal. The edges are still engraved, and that’s the only way you can tell it was once a coin of significant value.
- The monarch’s head on one side has been defaced by having their eyes scratched out.
- Tiny holes have been punched all around its circumference. They’ve been sewn through with fine gold cotton thread in a criss-cross pattern that circles the entire coin, as though trapping it in a net of gold.
- A magical eye has been embedded into one face of it. It blinks slowly, turning to look at things you can’t see.
- At some point it was enchanted to emit magical light, but the magic is fading. It flickers, weak and random, and is more of an annoyance than anything else.
- It’s been cut in half in a jagged manner that vaguely resembles a bite. The two sections have been rejoined with a tiny hidden hinge and spring, so you can bend one side back and create the illusion that it’s being removed and suddenly appearing again.
- It’s been entirely covered in bright blue enamel, and a gold sigil has been painted on both faces.
- Two identical coins have been glued together heads side together, creating one thick coin with two tails.
- A man with a missing eye has had it embedded into his orbital socket. It fits behind his eyelid, and he likes to wink at people with it.
- A thief was punished by having a heavy gold coin grafted to the bone of his skull, right in the middle of his forehead.
- It’s been turned to lead by a bungling alchemist.
- Magic has reduced it to kinetic sand that flows through the fingers of anybody who picks it up, before reforming into the perfect likeness of a coin on whatever surface it lands on.
- The soul of a wizard who lost a duel has been trapped inside it. If you look closely you can see the eyes in the heads side rolling wildly, and in the quiet of the night you can hear him screaming.
- It’s been enchanted to always return to its original owner’s pocket after an hour away.
- Although it’s cold to the touch, if it’s left on a wooden surface it will begin to heat up until a fire is raging.
- It’s been glued to the ground in the middle of a busy market by someone who intends to rob those who stop to try and pick it up.
- It’s been nailed to a heavy door deep inside a dungeon.
